CC to Break Ground for $23 million Western Ridge Housing Complex
COLORADO SPRINGS -- Colorado College will break ground for a major new campus housing complex on Friday, June 4.
When open in 2001, the new campus housing - three areas collectively called the Western Ridge Housing Complex - will boast an outdoor cafe, piazzas, and stellar views of Pikes Peak west of Colorado Springs. Several different floor plans will be available, including lofts, studios, flats, and 1-, 2-, and 4-person apartments, all wired for computers. An adjacent area will feature additional language-oriented theme houses.
About 67 percent of the total student body currently live on campus. The aim of these campus housing projects is to increase CC's student live-in population to 80 percent.
The Western Ridge will include rooms and apartments for more than 300 students, though some will replace obsolete facilities - in all, a net gain of about 200 on-campus housing spots. Room and board fees will pay off the debt obligation on this estimated $23 million project.
"Students will get all the amenities of an independent, apartment-style residence with all the perks of being on campus," says committee member Katie Callow, hall director in residential life.
As part of the Western Ridge project, the college is relocating two historic sorority lodges to the new east campus area, which also includes recreational playing fields and other student organization facilities. ###
