CROWN FACULTY CENTER LUNCHEON:

HOW TO GET STUDENTS TO READ LESS!

Date and Time: Wednesday, 4 November, Noon
Location: Gates Commons, Palmer Hall

Reading: O'Donnell, "How To Get Students to Read Less!"

Academics have no choice: Higher education has been and will be transformed by new technologies and new media. Where we have a choice is in what we try to make of the new challenges and opportunities.

This talk will concentrate on the primal act of reading. What do we want students to read? How should they read? And the hardest question of all turns out to be, how much?

Bad Habits Start Early!
(JO'D at Seven)

James J. O’Donnell, Provost of Georgetown University, has published widely on the history and culture of the late antique Mediterranean world and is a recognized innovator in the application of networked information technology in higher education. In 1990, he co-founded Bryn Mawr Classical Review, the second online scholarly journal in the humanities ever created. He is the author of several books, including Avatars of the Word: From Papyrus to Cyberspace, Augustine: A New Biography, and most recently, The Ruin of the Roman Empire: A New History.

Open to College faculty and staff members. To RSVP for the luncheon, please email Patti Spoelman. The lunch buffet will open at 11:45 a.m. and O’Donnell’s talk will begin shortly after noon. Click on the title above for the reading that will accompany the talk.

Co-sponsored by Educational Technology Services, the Crown Faculty Center, the Beta of Colorado chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, and the Departments of History and Classics.
