Research and Teaching Interests
I am a sociologist who is interested in gender, sexuality, inequality, youth and new media. A new edition of my book about sexuality and gender in high school, Dude, You're a Fag: Masculinity and Sexuality in High School is available from the University of California Press.
My current projects focus on youth and new media. The first is a book forthcoming from the University of Michigan Press entitled Anas, Mias and Wannas: Identity and Community in a Pro-ana Subculture. It is the most extensive study to date of the online pro-ana community. An article based on this research, “Pro-Anorexia Communities and Online Interaction,” is forthcoming in the journal Body and Society.
The second project, Logging On, Linking in and Coming Out examines how new media has become a central part of contemporary teen culture, especially in terms of sexuality, dating, and romance. A talk on these results can be seen here. They are also available in the new book Hanging Out, Geeking Out and Messing Around: Living and Learning with New Media.
