Language Placement Info

If you studied one or more languages in elementary, middle, or high school or have other non-English language experience, you need to 1) describe your language study and experience in the online questionnaire, and 2) take a language placement test in each language you have studied or have experience with. Note: even if you have no foreign language experience, please complete the first part of the questionnaire, indicating that you have no experience.  The questionnaire will be available online at:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=2I0M_2fZXGyBeqBYF4x8s0_2fQ_3d_3d

Please note that the questionnaire will not be online until May 16, 2012.  We ask that you complete the questionnaire by August 24. If you are unable to complete the questionnaire due to summer travel, please email Sarah Withee at swithee@coloradocollege.edu.  Please note that this deadline applies to winter start students as well as students who will begin in the fall.

Placement testing

Please complete a placement exam for each language you have studied, even if you do not plan on continuing to study that language at Colorado College. If after you arrive on campus you need a copy of your results, please contact Sarah Withee at swithee@coloradocollege.edu.

Online tests are available for French, German, and Spanish and should be completed by August 24. Please note that this deadline applies to winter start students as well as students who will begin in the fall.

Directions explaining how to access the tests are below.

If you have studied Russian, Chinese, Greek, Japanese, Hebrew, Arabic, Latin, or Italian, please contact Sarah Withee (swithee@coloradocollege.edu) to schedule an on-campus placement evaluation. If you need special accommodations for an on-campus exam, please indicate that in your request.  If you indicated in the survey that you have experience in a language other than one of the ones above, we will contact you.

Online placement testing in French, German, and Spanish

French, German, and Spanish use the BYU WebCAPE exam as their placement test.  The WebCAPE is an adaptive test.  If you answer a question correctly, you will get a harder question the next time.  If you answer a question incorrectly, you will get an easier question.  This means that the test can take anywhere from five minutes to 45 minutes.

Be sure you know your Colorado College e-mail address and your student ID number before you access the test at

You will then be asked to select the language for your test - French, German, or Spanish.  Choose a language, enter your identifying information, and answer the questions in the short questionnaire about your previous language study history.   After this, the test will begin.  At the end of the Spanish and French tests, you will be shown your score along with your recommended placement.  For German tests, you will need to consult the department to find out your placement.

If you encounter any problems, please contact Sarah Withee at  swithee@coloradocollege.edu
