New Vice President for Advancement--Sean M. Pieri

July 30, 2012

Dear Campus Community,

I am thrilled to announce that, with the unanimous support of the Board of Trustees Executive Committee, I have appointed Sean M. Pieri as the next vice president for advancement, effective October 8, 2012. We are fortunate that Sean, a former Colorado Springs resident, will be joining the CC community, as he brings an incredible track record of fundraising success, as well as great leadership and enthusiasm, to Colorado College’s advancement efforts.

Sean is currently the vice president of development at the College of William & Mary, and assistant secretary of the College of William & Mary Foundation. At William & Mary, Sean leads all aspects of the university’s development program and foundation. Since he joined William & Mary in 2006, he has spearheaded the top three fundraising years in the college’s history, and under his leadership, the 319-year-old college experienced its best fundraising successes ever, including record dollars raised, number of donors, reunion giving, and alumni participation rates. Sean was also responsible for leading the $518 million Campaign for William & Mary.

Prior to working at the College of William & Mary, Sean served as vice president of development at the U.S. Air Force Academy from 2002 to 2006, where he led the academy’s development program and first-ever comprehensive campaign, raising $100 million. While there, he expanded a fledgling development program, increased annual fundraising from $1.4 million to $10.2 million, and helped to secure the four largest gifts in the academy’s history.

Sean also served as managing director of development for the United States Olympic Committee from 2000 to 2002. He created a major gift fundraising program, oversaw the USOC’s direct-mail program, and helped to secure the first-ever gifts to the USOC’s endowment.
He also worked as assistant vice president of development and assistant dean of development and external relations at the Foster School of Business at the University of Washington, and director of development at the Kellstadt Graduate School of Business and College of Commerce at DePaul University.

I would like to thank Professor Tim Fuller for serving as interim vice president for advancement. Tim’s strong leadership has been so important in supporting the advancement division during the transition. I also thank the entire division for their hard work and dedication over the past year, which was very successful in terms of fundraising.

The vice president for advancement search committee was instrumental in identifying and recruiting candidates. I thank them all for their wise insights throughout this process. The committee members were: Megan Anderson (assistant professor of geology and member of the Faculty Advancement Advisory Committee); Salvatore Bizzarro (professor of Romance languages and member of the Faculty Advancement Advisory Committee); Stacy Davidson (college controller and director of investments); Bob Lee (professor of political science and member of the Faculty Advancement Advisory Committee); Ken Ralph (director of athletics); Roger Smith, (director of the office of minority and international students); John Simons (professor of English and member of the Faculty Advancement Advisory Committee); Adam Press ’84 (trustee), and Amy Shackelford Louis ’84 (trustee).

Sean’s ambition, energy and personality are a great fit with CC’s innovative spirit, and I’m confident he will further spark the enthusiasm of our alumni, parents, and friends who already love the college. His experience will serve us well as we work to make this great place even better. Sean and his wife, Karen, have two children: daughter Reilly, 16, and son Kyle, 14. Please join me in welcoming Sean and his family to our community.

With warm regards,

Jill Tiefenthaler
