Server Application Advisory Team
We are a cross-functional team of experts from within the Information Management division whose purpose is to help departments and offices across campus evaluate, purchase, and create a support plan for specialized server-based software.
What we do
In the context of the Server Application Advisory Team, "server-based software" has two meanings.
- Applications that are installed on the college's servers, run over the CC network, and used by various people across campus.
- Ex. PROWL, TMA (facilities workorder system), Banner
- Applications that are hosted by third-party companies (in the "cloud") which we access via the internet.
- Ex. Qualtrics, Survey Monkey, ARTstor (library image database)
Items which are currently outside the scope of the team are smaller, desktop based software packages with no server component such as Adobe Photoshop and SPSS.
Foremost among the goals of the Server Application Advisory Team are to:
- Lend our expertise in helping you make the best choice of software to meet a need, including pointing out options you may not be aware of.
- Identify areas in which CC may already have software to fit the need, increasing efficiency and saving money at the college (and from your budget).
- Figure out the technical details (required hardware, network impact, storage space) etc.
- Help create a solid support plan so that it’s clear what to do when a problem occurs or an upgrade needs to happen.
Essentially, we want to be a great resource for you to draw on when you have an idea to improve something in your area and want to see what software might be out there to fill that need, then assist you with making it a reality.
Process overview
As needs and technology change the Server Application Advisory Team will both reach out to departments and offices as well as accept suggestions for server-based software that would be useful at the college. When beginning a project the team will help evaluate the community need for a specific application, determine funding options, and establish a timeline for implementation. By participating in requirements gathering as well as vendor discussions and demos, we will be able to create a support plan for the new application, evaluate the impact on college resources, and make recommendations to the appropriate departments and offices.
