Renewal & Replacement Projects

We would like to make you aware of several upcoming campus construction projects.

Cheryl Schlessman Bennett Children's Center

The college has initiated work on the new Cheryl Schlessman Bennett Children’s Center, located at 909 N. Nevada Avenue, south of the current center.

To accommodate the new campus facility, two Colorado College-owned houses at 210 and 214 E. Cache la Poudre St. were razed. Prior to demolition of these properties, CC partnered with Habitat for Humanity to salvage designated construction materials for donation to ReStore, Habitat’s local resale outlet.

In a sustainability-minded decision, the house at 901 N. Nevada Ave. will become part of the new center. The north-facing exterior wall will serve as the receiving point for the new center. The 901 house will be completely renovated and will serve needed administrative and library functions for the new facility. Children and staff will begin occupying the new 10,000-square-foot center by Sept 1, 2012.

The new facility is designed to support 58 children, nearly doubling the current capacity, and will include a three-tiered program for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. When vacated, the current Children’s Center will be converted into one or two apartments for short-term housing for faculty and staff.

El Pomar Sports Center Renovation

There will be extended area closures associated with the construction at the North Addition phase of the El Pomar project. The affected areas are west of Cutler Hall, south of Bemis Hall, west of the Williams Central Plant, and north of Cossitt Hall. (See attached map.) Walkways through these areas will be closed immediately following Commencement on May 21, 2012. It is anticipated that these areas will continue to have restricted access through Spring 2013. Please use detours and alternate walkways to access athletic fields, Bemis Hall, the Central Plant, and Cossitt Hall

Shove Chapel Walkway and Landscape Improvements

Improvements to the Nevada Avenue crosswalks at Shove Chapel and Barnes Science Center will begin on Tuesday, May 22, and continue into June. (See the attached drawing.) Bump-outs, approximately the width of parked cars, will be constructed to move the crosswalk ramps into the street. Concrete pedestrian ramps will be enhanced with lighted bollards to improve visibility and safety. The walkway ramps into the street will both improve visibility and safety at the crosswalk ramps. In addition, pedestrians will enjoy a shorter crosswalk distance. Lastly, a much needed drop-off loop will be constructed between Olin Hall and Shove Chapel to serve the many weddings, funerals, and other events at Shove Chapel. The college DRB has reviewed the proposed improvements.

VFA Capital Planning Program

VFA is a facility condition assessment services and capital planning software that answers the following questions:

Uintah/Monument Valley Park Tennis Courts and Pinetum Improvements

Colorado College and the Colorado Springs Parks and Recreation Department have entered into a 25-year agreement in which the college will share in the operation and maintenance of the tennis courts, adjacent landscaping, and Pinetum designated space north of Stewart Field and south of Uintah Street.  (See attached rendering.)  The college will have priority use of the city-owned tennis courts throughout the 25-year agreement.  When not being used by the college, the tennis courts will remain available, 7 days a week, for public use during the hours of 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.. The college is making improvements to include the rebuilding of the courts, the resurfacing of the courts, replacing the court net systems, replacing the sidewalk along Uintah, installing irrigation for the Pinetum and new sod areas adjacent the new sidewalk, and providing soil amendments and native, low-water-use seed in the Pinetum.  The college Design Review Board (DRB) has reviewed the proposed improvements.

Bemis Circle and Ticknor Service Vehicle Parking Improvements

Site improvements to the Bemis Circle and Ticknor Hall will begin on Tuesday, May 22, and continue through June.  During the construction window, the traffic circle for pick-up and drop-off for the FunQuest summer program at Taylor Hall will remain operational.  The project will include construction of an ADA walkway extension on the north and west side of Bemis to provide access to the new El Pomar north addition.  New curb and gutter will be installed around the Bemis Circle and in front of Bemis, McGregor, and Ticknor Halls. (See the attached rendering)  Some overgrown trees will be removed due to the damage they are causing to the asphalt roadway and curbing around the circle.  The removed trees will be replaced with more appropriate trees as part of the landscape improvement scope.  Two service vehicle and three 15-minute parking spaces will be added to improve maintenance and pick-up and delivery access to offices in Bemis and Ticknor.  Parking spaces and Bemis and McGregor bicycle pads will have pervious pavers installed to improve aesthetics and to dissipate stormwater accumulation. The improvements west of Cutler Hall will occur in conjunction with the completion of the El Pomar renovation and North Addition phases.  The college DRB has reviewed the proposed improvements.
