Meals at Baca

Colorado College maintains a Baca campus located 175 miles southwest of Colorado Springs at the western base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the San Luis Valley. Managed by the Hulbert Center for Southwest Studies, Baca conference center, townhouse facilities, and lodge are available for use by classes and other college groups.

Desert Sage Restaurant  Desert Sage

The Desert Sage Restaurant is contracted by Colorado College to provide meals for groups visiting Baca. Please obtain a Baca Sign-Up Sheet from your department or Rita Zook at x6686. We encourage everyone to attend a Baca Orientation class. You must submit the Baca Sign-Up Sheet to the Dean's Office at least three working days prior to departure.

Student Meal Plans

Students on meal plans will have meals deducted while attending Baca. Students not on meal plans will have their student account billed per meal. Students are not allowed to sign over their meals to defray the costs of another classmate's trip. A student who feels they cannot afford the cost of a trip to Baca should contact Student Accounts.

Snacks at Baca

Students should not be encouraged to bring food to Baca. Snacks can most likely be construed as the exception to this rule (nobody is going to get kicked out of the lodge for bringing a bag of chips). Snacks and beverages can be purchased from Desert Sage and/or Crestone Grocery store. As a good neighbor, we should encourage this practice as opposed to packing in our own food.

Arriving at Baca

Upon arrival at Baca, the person in charge of the group should contact the restaurant, advise the staff of any special diet requirements, and give the restaurant an idea of schedules and times to serve meals. Upon request, Desert Sage is willing to stay open at night to accommodate students. They will also prepare meals to go, however, they do require sufficient notice to prepare box meals.

The Desert Sage bills the Business Office after each class. Faculty / Group leaders are to sign a copy of the bill at the conclusion of their stay at Baca.

Field Trips

A field trip is best defined as going off campus and needing money for meals.   In other words, Colorado College, Bon Appetit, or Baca will not provide meals. Please obtain a Field Trip Sign-Up Sheet from your department or the Dean's Office. You must submit the Field Trip Sign-Up Sheet to the Dean's Office at least five working days prior to departure. The Dean's Office will submit your request to the Business Office, which requires five business days to process a check.

Students on meal plans will have meals deducted at a rate of 2 per day while participating in the field trip. Students not on meal plans will have their student account billed. Students are not allowed to sign over their meals to defray the costs of another classmate's trip. Any student who feels they cannot afford the cost of a field trip should contact the Dean's Office.

Pack Outs

Pack outs, sack lunches, barbeques - any meal catered by Bon Appetit outside of the dining facilities. Please obtain a sign-up sheet from Bon Appetit extension 6673.

Students on meal plans will have a meal deducted. Students not on a meal plan will have their student account billed. Students are not allowed to sign over their meals to defray the cost of another classmate's meal. Any student who feels they cannot afford the cost of a lunch should feel free to bring their own.

Field trips and Pack Outs are not mix-and-match; If you will be away for three days or less, you must sign up for a pack out, for four days or more, your request, in its entirety, will be handled as a field trip.

Block Trips

Also known as "Block Away", these classes are taught off campus for an entire block (or more). It is important the Dean's Office is aware of any student on a meal plan who plans to be away for an entire block. Adjustments are made to the student's account by refunding a a portion of meal plan costs for meals they will miss while away. Often these funds are used by students to defray the cost of meals and traveling. A simple email from the faculty teaching the course, listing each student by name and CC id number will suffice as notice.  The form is also available online.
