Our Language Studies Grant from the Mellon Foundation
In December 2011, Colorado College received a $509,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation to support development of our language curriculum.
Like our 2009 Mellon grant, this 2011 award will provide funds to encourage our language faculty to experiment with different pedagogies and to develop placement and proficiency tests. It also will support faculty from across the disciplines who want to achieve greater language proficiency and incorporate language study into their courses. As part of this project’s second phase, we will build on the recently established language-based area studies program in the Mediterranean by using it as a model for structuring other language-based area studies programs in Asia and Latin America. Faculty may apply through the Dean’s Office for:
1) Stipends and travel support for intensive language study (grant amounts will vary; total of $40,000 available each year)
2) Course development that incorporates languages, on-campus or abroad (stipends are $4,000 each or $2,000 each if two faculty are developing a single course, plus $3,000 for travel support for each faculty member developing a course abroad) and
3) Support to develop language proficiency exams
