Crisis Protocol

CRISIS PROTOCOL BRIEF OUTLINE
Guidelines for Off-Campus Programs
  • Boettcher Health Center is open 24 hours a day, x6384, during the regular academic year.
    • Medical Crisis (e.g., severe injury, seizure, abundant bleeding, unconsciousness)
      • Call ambulance (rescue squad tel. 911 in El Paso County).
      • Accompany patient to hospital emergency room.
      • Inform emergency room that this is a Colorado College student. b.
      • Ask e.r. staff to inform Boettcher Health Center, 389-6384. Note: Boettcher has a health history card on students which may provide useful information. The nurse will also page a counselor to assist the family if needed.
    • Mental Health Crisis (e.g., drug or alcohol overdose, psychotic reactions, violent or suicidal behavior)

      • Follow procedures above for medical crisis.
        • When calling Boettcher Health Center, have nurse page the counselor on duty to consult and assist with the treatment plan and disposition of the student. b.
        • Take drug paraphernalia, if any, to emergency room.
  • Reports to College Administration
    • Medical and mental health crises and other serious incidents (e.g., life-threatening situations, suspendable offenses, unscheduled loss of contact with student, serious involvement with public relations consequences) must be reported to the College administration as soon as possible. 1. During work days call the Dean of Students (x6684) or Vice President for Student Life (x6689). 2. At other times call campus Security (719-389-6707) and ask the guard to contact the administrator on emergency call duty who is available 24 hours a day.
    • Gather the following kinds of information for reports to the College
      • condition and diagnosis of the student
      • name of physician
      • location of student (address, telephone number)
      • cause of injury (parties involved, details of accident)
      • police involvement?
      • parents notified?
      • student's needs:
        • transportation back to campus observation in Boettcher Health Center
        • any other assistance needed
