Zuia Project

Overview:

Our mission is to empower the rural women and youth of Ugenya to take charge of their health and improve their leadership and entrepreneurship skills through capacity building. The project was founded in the summer of 2011 by Ukwala residents and Colorado College students with a Kathryn W. Davis Projects for Peace Grant. The project includes a vocational training center for women; an HIV prevention health outreach program; subsidized computer classes; and a women's civic engagement program. In an impoverished region with institutionalized misogyny and where almost 1 in 5 people is HIV positive, Ukwala requires interventions that confront the root causes of such problems. The Zuia Project offers a whole systems approach to preventative treatment.
