Queer CC Nominated for LGBT Education Champion Award

The Colorado College Queer Community Coalition (Queer CC) has been nominated for the 2013 Education Champion Award at the 12th Annual Colorado Springs LGBT Pride Awards.

The Colorado Springs LGBT Pride Awards celebrates individuals, organizations, and groups which the local community feels deserve special recognition for their support, efforts, and actions toward connecting, supporting, and empowering the local LGBT community.

Queer CC aims to expand and enhance the vision for a more cohesive queer community at Colorado College. Queer CC provides safe spaces and opportunities for all students to explore gender and sexuality, to be allies and advocates, to identify with the queer community if they so choose, no matter their gender or sexual identity, gender presentation, or sexual relationships. The program was nominated in part “because they look out for the youth that is our future.”

The nomination also states “The college community can be a very uncomfortable place for the LGBT community and having such a program helps those who experience hardships on the campus. This organization also holds peer groups for those who struggle with coming out or identifying themselves as a part of the LGBT community.” Queer CC is part of the Office of Minority and International Students and is overseen by LGBTQ Student Specialist Beth Kancilia.

Other nominees are Inside Out Youth Services, Colorado Springs School District 11 Board of Education, Wasson High School Gay Straight Trans Alliance, and MOSAIC of UCCS. The winner will be announced at the 2013 Pride Awards Black Tie Event, to be held from 6-11 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Antler’s Hilton, 4 S Cascade Ave, Colorado Springs.
