New media guru leads convergence class

Jaron Lanier signs a book offered by a participant in the convergence class on Feb. 9.

Jaron Lanier, the man credited with coining the phrase “virtual reality” and the author of “You Are Not a Gadget,” delivered the 2012 Cornerstone Keynote Lecture on Feb. 8. Lanier discussed the possibilities, pitfalls, and potential of new media in a presentation titled “You Are Not a Gadget: The Undiscovered Continents of Human Potential.”

The following morning, Lanier met with approximately 70 students from six different courses in an interdisciplinary “convergence class.” Among the classes represented were Beginning Filmmaking, Computer Science, Experimental and Expanded Cinema, and Media Studies.
