Kyra Gurney receives Fulbright Scholarship

Colorado College senior Kyra Gurney has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Scholarship for 2012-2013, and will teach English in a Colombian university.

Gurney, who is from Albuquerque, N.M., is a comparative literature major with a minor in Latin American studies. She spent her junior year of high school as an exchange student in Argentina and participated in CC’s first Mediterranean Semester in fall of 2010.  While studying Arabic in Morocco, Gurney taught English to middle and high school students at a low-income public school in Rabat, and cites this as an influential experience and incentive for her Fulbright ETA application.

Gurney wrote in her Fulbright application, “When I return to the United States, I plan to teach at a low income public school and attend graduate school to obtain a master’s degree in education.  After teaching for several years, I would like to get a Ph.D. in Latin American studies and apply my degree to the field of public policy, either in the area of education or international relations.”
