Fitness Center Draws Rave Reviews At Dedication Ceremony

The Colorado College community collectively got its chance to meet and thank Adam F. Press ’84, a bona fide “difference maker,” on Friday during an official dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony outside the campus' new fitness center named after the alumnus.

Press' commitment of $3.5 million provided the necessary impetus that made the final phase of a $27 million renovation of the El Pomar Sports Center possible. The 29,000-square-foot Adam F. Press Fitness Center, located on the north end of the building, opened for use by the campus community on March 25, after nearly 17 months of construction that began late in 2011.

The fitness center, and entire building, received rave reviews during the dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony. William J. Hybl, chairman and CEO of the El Pomar Foundation, called it a "truly remarkable" facility. "We are very proud to be part of this project," he said to the gathering that included dignitaries from the El Pomar Foundation, CC’s Board of Trustees, college administrators, members of the athletics department, and CC students.

"It's a really, really tremendous feeling to walk into this building and see our students involved in healthy pursuits and healthy pastimes," said Ken Ralph, director of athletics. "To me, it's a lot of fun that we're now the place to be on campus. In a society that deals so much with obesity and type-2 diabetes, to be able to provide our students with a safe place to work out, an active place, it's really something very, very special."
