CC Welcomes New Students!

CC Welcomes New Students!

Colorado College welcomes 524 members of the Class of 2017 and 38 transfer students to campus on Saturday, Aug. 24, for New Student Orientation and the start of the 2013-14 academic year. Orientation highlights include welcoming remarks by President Jill Tiefenthaler, a picnic on the quad for new students and their families, and planning meetings for CC’s signature Priddy Experience, a four-day trip in which new students fan out across the Southwest participating in various urban and backcountry service-oriented projects.

Before departing on Wednesday, Aug. 28, for the Priddy Experience, students will  take part in a variety of New Student Orientation discussions, including “Five Things You Should be Prepared to Discuss with Your Faculty Advisor" and “How to Succeed at CC: What I Wish I Had Known.” Each year, orientation includes a summer reading assignment designed to incorporate students into ongoing campus conversations and academic life. This year students read “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” and will attend a capstone lecture by Ruth Faden, the Wagley Professor of Biomedical Ethics and Executive Director of Berman Bioethics Institute at Johns Hopkins University, where much of the research involving Lacks’s “HeLa” cells took place.

Students will return to campus on Sunday, Sept. 1. Opening Convocation will be held at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 2, with Paul Franco ’78, professor of government at Bowdoin College, giving the keynote address, titled “From a Small College in Colorado to a Small College in Maine.” Opening Convocation also serves as the First Monday event for Block 1. Classes begin at 10:30 a.m. and an all-campus picnic, sponsored by the President’s Office, will be held at noon. The Class of 2017 will be among the first to enjoy several new campus improvements, including the $14 million renovation of Slocum Hall, the $27 million renovation of the El Pomar Sports Center, and the new Adam F. Press Fitness Center.
