CC Research Conducted Via Solar-Powered Raft

CC Research Conducted Via Solar-Powered Raft

There’s an easy way to distinguish the Colorado College researchers from the other boaters currently on Lake Powell – they’re the ones on the solar raft.

Four Colorado College researchers, Will Stauffer-Norris ’11, Zak Podmore ’11, David Spiegel ’12, and Carson McMurray ’12, are participating in the Down the Colorado expedition. They are rafting the Colorado River, crossing the inland sea of Lake Powell and continuing on to explore the depths of the Grand Canyon via a solar-powered raft. Podmore is keeping a Huffington Post blog about the trip: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/zachary-podmore/the-hole-in-the-colorado_b_1749889.html

The researchers are measuring dissolved oxygen, temperature, salinity, pH, nutrients and turbidity each day, offering a finer resolution of data than is currently recorded at USGS gauging stations.

The Down the Colorado expedition is part of Colorado College’s State of the Rockies Project, a student-faculty collaborative research initiative that seeks to increase public understanding of vital issues affecting the Rockies.
