CC Music Instructor Steve Barta Nominated for Grammy Award

Colorado College Music Instructor Steve Barta’s newest album, “Jumpin Jazz Kids: A Swinging Jungle Tale,” has been nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Children’s Album. Barta, a composer, recording artist, author, and educator, has been an instructor in jazz piano at CC for three years.

The album, featuring Al Jarreau, Hubert Laws, and Dee Dee Bridgewater and narrated by James Murray, celebrates the rich history of jazz and popular music by paying tribute to its legendary pioneers through story, song, and a variety of musical styles. “Jumpin Jazz Kids” also recently won the highly coveted Parents’ Choice Gold Award, the nation’s oldest nonprofit guide to quality children’s media and toys.

Barta’s music reflects his many influences, particularly Brazilian, jazz, and classical. After touring extensively with flutist Herbie Mann’s band Jasil Brazz, he released the widely acclaimed recording “Blue River with special guest Herbie Mann.” Since then Barta has released 14 recordings, including “Another Life Brazil” recorded with legendary jazz and Latin greats Hubert Laws, Herbie Mann, Dori Caymmi, and Paulinho da Costa. Barta also has written several works for symphony orchestra that have been performed worldwide, including “Heritage Suite” and “A Midwest Dream.”

The 55th Grammy Award presentation will be held on Feb. 10 in Los Angeles.  In celebration of the CD release as well as the nomination, a special performance will take place two days before the award ceremony, at 11 a.m., Feb. 8 at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, as part of Grammy Week and the museum’s educational outreach series.
