The exhibition features recent work by Professor of Art, Dan Raffin, that was created using a computer-aided design program. Coburn Gallery is open every Tuesday- Friday 12:30- 6pm.

Paula Richman, Danforth Professor of South Asian Religion at Oberlin College, will speak on “The Ramayana in South Asia: Many Tellings of a Narrative" at Gaylord Hall, Worner Center, Thursday, Feb. 23rd, at 4:00 pm. Professor Richman has published two monographs on Tamil literature and has edited and contributed to two volumes on the epic, the Ramayana, including its many distinctive retellings from South Indian perspectives. The Ramayana story has been crucial in shaping the culture of South and South East Asia and, today, as a global text, it has come to be a crucible in contemporary debates on religious values and identity politics.

At the turn of the 20th century, collectors began acquiring Native American objects with increasing fervor. Often, collectors created specific display areas within their homes to showcase their treasures. Called “Indian Corners,” these areas featured a hodgepodge of ritual objects, textiles, ceramics, and images. Created and curated by artist and scholar Wendy Red Star, the IDEA Space exhibition Indian Corner examines the impetuses and implications of collecting Native objects and artifacts. The exhibition features a kitsch version of a 21st Century “Indian Corner” juxtaposed with objects from the Colorado Spring Fine Arts Center’s collection of Native American objects. The exhibition will be on display from February 24 - March 14, Tuesday through Saturday, 12:30 - 7 p.m.

Indian Corner Exhibition Reception and Gallery Talk

Curator and artist Wendy Red Star will give an informal gallery talk about the Indian Corner exhibition. Wendy Red Star was born in Billings, Montana, just outside of the Crow Indian reservation where she was raised. She grew up in a multicultural family. Her mother is of Irish decent, her father a full-blood Crow Indian and her older sister is Korean. Red Star left the Crow Indian reservation when she was 18 to attend Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana, where she studied sculpture. She then went on to earn her MFA in sculpture at UCLA. Wendy currently lives in Portland, Oregon, where she is an adjunct professor of art at Portland State University. Her artistic work explores the intersection between life on the Crow Indian reservation and the world outside of that environment. She thinks of herself as a Crow Indian cultural archivist speaking sincerely about the experience of being a Crow Indian in contemporary society.

National History Day Regional Competition

For the 20th year, CC will host the regional competition of National History Day. Area students from local middle and high schools will present their research projects focusing on this year's national theme "Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History." Projects include exhibit backboards, historic papers, documentaries, web pages and dramatic performances. Judging will take place from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday and from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony in Shove Chapel at 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 25.
