NEW COLORADO LICENSE PLATES
SPORT COLORADO COLLEGE TIGERS LOGO

Colorado drivers who support CC academics eligible for plates beginning July 1

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – June 30, 2006 – Colorado College hits the road beginning July 1, with new Colorado license plates that tout the national liberal arts college and its CC Tigers athletics teams.

The Colorado Legislature approved the new gold, black and white license plates in 2005, after the college’s alumni office gathered commitment signatures from 500 Colorado residents saying they were interested in buying the plates.

The new license plates feature the familiar Colorado mountain range found on traditional green and white Colorado tags, but instead rendered in Colorado College gold. The CC Tigers logo is centered on the plate, and the words “Colorado College” appear in black, centered at the bottom. The plates will be issued for passenger vehicles, light trucks and motor homes. They may also be personalized.

“Alumni, parents and Tiger sports fans have wanted CC plates for years,” said Karrie Williams, director of alumni and parent relations. “We’re so pleased to offer these. I can’t wait to see the plates on cars and trucks traveling our Colorado roads. It adds a new dimension to that license plate game we played when we were kids.”

To be eligible to purchase the new Colorado College license plates, buyers must make a $50 tax-deductible gift donation toward academics at CC. Donations received any time after October 1, 2004, qualify for a License Plate Approval Certificate. The college sent letters this month to all Colorado residents who have made qualifying donations.  Each letter contained the necessary certificate required by the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles. Donors receive one certificate for each gift, in the name of the donor. Those who want more than one certificate must make more than one gift. Qualifying donations may be made to the college at http://secure.infront.com/coloradocollege/donate.asp.

The state specifies the gift must go toward academic uses; gifts that do not qualify include those designated for athletics or the college’s radio station, KRCC, etc. For information on particular gift designations, contact Jim.Grey@ColoradoCollege.edu.

Once donors receive the certificate, they must take it to their county's motor vehicle office and apply for their CC plate. In addition to regular registration fees, there is a one-time fee of $25 (or $35 for personalized plates; the CC logo will not appear on personalized plates). Fees paid to the Department of Motor Vehicles are not considered a charitable donation.
