CC CONTINUES HOUSING, FOOD, HEALTH SERVICES
FOR MORE THAN 500 SNOWED-IN STUDENTS
College arranges shuttles to airports; students carpool to airports in region
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Dec. 22, 2006 – More than 500 Colorado College students, whose classes ended Wednesday, Dec. 20, were prevented from leaving campus for winter break due to snow, closed roads and canceled flights. To accommodate these students, college staff members are keeping residence halls open, providing food service, arranging transportation and providing medical services.
"For some students, it's been an adventure, and for others, it's been a bit stressful to not get home when they wished," said Ginger Morgan, associate dean of students at Colorado College. "But everyone has risen to the occasion; staff members have worked hard to provide housing, food, health care and transportation, and students are being flexible and making the best of it.”
At least 500 students who live in residence halls were still on campus Friday morning. In addition, many students who live off campus were unable to leave since the storm hit on Wednesday. At least a dozen students are expected to remain until Christmas.
About 280 CC students expect to leave today through various means of transportation. Many students have rescheduled flights via Colorado Springs Airport and DIA; the college is providing shuttle buses to transport students to both airports. Three buses shuttled students to DIA today. Shuttles to the Colorado Springs Airport have been running since Thursday. Some students even carpooled to airports in neighboring states to avoid the bottleneck of travelers and flights at Denver International Airport.
Colorado College’s residence halls will continue to house students until they can leave. The Worner Campus Center will remain open until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
The college's dining services will continue as long as necessary to accommodate students. In addition, Colorado College's health center will hold clinic hours today and Saturday.
