EUFORQUESTRA MELDS WORLD MUSIC
TO CREATE ‘AFRO-CARIBBEAN BARNYARD FUNK’

Jam band explores wild fusion of music traditions from around the globe

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Feb. 20, 2007 – Put guitar, mandolin, keyboards, bass, steel drums, vibes, percussion, saxophone and voice to the beats, styles and traditions of music from around the world, and you get Euforquestra.

The self-proclaimed "Afro-Caribbean-barnyard-funk" band fuses Afrobeat, Afro-Cuban, samba, soca, funk, reggae and bluegrass. That rare blend comes to life in concert at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 1 at Venue 515, at 515 Manitou Ave. in Manitou Springs. The show is the second in a new series of concerts sponsored by KRCC-91.5 FM, Colorado College’s NPR-affiliate public radio station.

Tickets are $16 for the general public, and $12 for KRCC or Business of Art Center members. Tickets are available at KRCC, 912 N. Weber St., Colorado Springs; the Business of Art Center, 513 Manitou Ave., Manitou Springs; or, for general admission purchases only, via www.ticketweb.com. Admission is $12 for CC ID holders, who must purchase their tickets at KRCC.

Euforquestra is an eclectic world-beat ensemble from Iowa City, Iowa, that preserves global music traditions, trying anything at least once and fusing different styles that appeal to them.
Although the band is most commonly categorized as a jam band, the appeal of its music reaches out to any and everyone with an "inclusive 'everyone get in here' sense of humor," as described by one music critic.

Something new is always being performed by Euforquestra as new projects drive the band into further musical studies. For example, "Explorations in Afrobeat," the band’s recent release, is a fusion of Western African and Cuban music rooted in the Yoruba tradition. Two members of Euforquestra have studied in Cuba, so the band dives deep into a rich tradition of Cuban rhythm and song evolved from the Yoruba tribe, which was brought to Cuba as well as other countries years ago during the slave trade.

The ensemble includes Mike Tallman on guitar, mandolin and vocals; Eric Quiner on keyboards and vocals; Adam Grosso on bass, steel pan, vibes and vocals; Josten Foley on drums and vocals; Matt Grundstad on auxiliary percussion and vocals; Ryan Jeter on tenor saxophone and vocals; and Austin Zaletel on alto saxophone and vocals.
