Two CC Seniors Awarded Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships - Colorado College

Two Colorado College seniors have received Fulbright English Teaching Assistantships to teach overseas next year. Nikki Muyskens, of Highlands Ranch, Colo., will be teaching in South Korea, and Masha Olson, of Sioux Falls, SD., will teach in Russia.
Muyskens, a comparative literature major with minors in education and Spanish, departs in July to teach English in a Korean elementary school. She will go through six weeks of training on language, culture, and teaching methodologies, and will be living with a host family. While there, she hopes to learn more about religious life in South Korea, especially in the growth of Christianity. Muyskens, who volunteered in an elementary school last year, would like to pursue elementary education as a career.  After a year or two in South Korea, she hopes to return to Colorado and get a master's degree and a teaching license. 
Olson, a Russian and Eurasian studies major with a minor in Asian studies, will teach English in Voronezh State Technical Academy in the city of Voronezh, Russia. In continuation of her thesis topic, she also will study the methods of teaching Russian as a foreign language, as opposed to how Russian is taught in America. She spent six months studying in Russia last year, and saw many of the social challenges (alcoholism, prostitution, crime) facing Russian youth. During her Fulbright stay, she hopes to volunteer with children, either at various orphanages in Russia or in elementary and middle schools.
