CC Music Professor Levine receives NEH fellowship

May 8, 2008

Victoria Lindsay Levine, Colorado College professor of music, has been awarded a $50,400 faculty research fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities for the 2008-09 academic year. Levine is an ethnomusicologist whose research focuses on American Indian music. Her NEH Fellowship project is a study of music, ceremonial life, and social relationships among the Woodland Indian communities of eastern Oklahoma.

The award enables Levine to take a full-year sabbatical to work on a collaborative book project, which examines the role of music in maintaining a balance between local and regional expressive traditions among Woodland peoples.  The project will be the first comprehensive study of Woodland Indian musical, ceremonial, and social interaction.

She teaches a course on native musics of the Southwest, as well as a more general course on native North American musics, in addition to courses in ethnomusicology and Southwest Studies.
