The Visiting Writers Series brings a lively and diverse group of writers to Colorado Springs throughout the academic year. Recent visitors have included John Updike, Adrienne Rich, Robert Hass, Robert Pinsky, Michael Chabon, Toi Derricotte, and Richard Wilbur.

2004-05 VISITING WRITERS SERIES

This year’s series features well-known writers including Terry Tempest Williams, who mesmerized her audience at her last reading on CC’s campus, and environmental writer Barry Lopez. The series is organized by the Colorado College English Department; information is available by calling 389-6853. All readings are free and open to the public.

Maria Hummel and Mark Irwin
Humme
l is a fiction writer, poet, and author of the Civil War novel Wilderness Run. Irwin is a nationally acclaimed poet whose most recent book is Bright Hunger. Thursday September 9 at 7 p.m. in the McHugh Commons.

B.H. Fairchild
Poet and author of Early Occult Memory Systems of the Lower Midwest, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award. Other books include The Arrival of the Future, Local Knowledge, and The Art of the Lathe, a finalist for the National Book Award and winner of the Kingsley Tufts Award. Thursday October 14 at 7 p.m. in Packard Hall.

David Mason
CC faculty member and poet whose books include The Country I Remember, Twentieth-Century American Poetry, and Arrivals. Thursday October 21 at 7 p.m. in the McHugh Commons.

Austin Clarke
Canadian writer, born and raised in Barbados, the author of fifteen works of fiction, including the award-winning novel The Polished Hoe (2002). Sponsored by the Donner Canadian Scholars Program. Thursday November 11 at 7 p.m. in the McHugh Commons.

Richard Yañez
El Paso native and former Riley Scholar at CC, author of El Paso del Norte: Stories on the Border. Thursday November 18 at 7 p.m. in Bemis Great Hall.

Jane Wampler and Aaron Anstett
Wampler received the Writers Exchange Award from Poets & Writers and a Colorado Council on the Arts fellowship. Anstett is a widely published poet and author of Sustenance. Thursday December 2 at 7 p.m. in McHugh Commons.

Demetria Martinez
Author, columnist and activist known for her work with the Sanctuary Movement. Her books include The Devil’s Workshop and Mother Tongue. Sponsored by the Andrew Norman Lecture Fund of the Hulbert Center for Southwestern Studies. Thursday December 9 at 7 p.m. in Gates Common Room.

Nancy Knipe, Andrea Lucard, and Jessy Randall
Knipe won first place in the Glimmer Train Very Short Fiction competition. Lucard is a graduate of Oberlin College and the Warren Wilson MFA Program in fiction. Randall’s poetry chapbook is titled Slumber Party at the Aquarium. Thursday February 3 at 7 p.m. in the McHugh Commons.

Carol Moldaw and Arthur Sze
Moldaw is winner of the Field Poetry Prize for The Lightning Field. Lannan Literary Award recipient Sze’s most recent book of poems is The Redshifting Web. Monday March 7 at 7 p.m. in the McHugh Commons.

David Whyte
Poet and renowned public speaker whose books include Everything is Waiting for You and Crossing the Unknown Sea. Sponsored by ABC Bank. Tuesday, March 8 at 7 p.m., Antlers Hotel Heritage Ballroom, 4 S. Cascade Ave.

Stuart Dischell
Award-winning poet with three books from Penguin: Good Hope Road, Evenings and Avenues, and Dig Safe. Thursday March 31 at 7 p.m. in the McHugh Commons.

Terry Tempest Williams
Renowned essayist, nature writer, and social activist. Williams’ books include Refuge: An Unnatural History of Family and Place and Red: Patience and Passion in the Desert. Sponsored by the D.J. MacLean Endowed Fund for English. Thursday April 7 at 7 pm in Armstrong Theatre.

Barry Lopez
National Book Award-winning environmental writer whose books include Resistance and Arctic Dreams speaks on "Leaving Lascaux: Shaping Human Nature". Sponsored by the D.J. MacLean Endowed Fund for English. Thursday, April 14 at 7 p.m., Gates Common Room, Palmer Hall.

Jenn Habel and Jane Hilberry
Habel’s poems appear in Southern Poetry Review, Greensboro Review and other magazines. Hilberry’s new book of poems is Body Painting. Thursday April 28 at 7 p.m. in the McHugh Commons.
