As part of the "Sugar, Sugar" exhibit in the I.D.E.A. Space, the second in a series of Sugar Salons focuses on the historical and contemporary impact of the sugar industry, both regionally and internationally. Featured artist and former sugar beet farmer Tracy Linder and Colorado College faculty will use the exhibition as a springboard for an informal discussion of the local and international economic, social and political impact of producing sugar. Sponsored by the Robert & Ruby Priddy Charitable Trust and the Colorado College Cultural Attractions Fund.
Award-winning naturalist and author of many books, including "Wild Thoughts from Wild Places," "The Reluctant Mr. Darwin" and "Natural Acts." Sponsored by the Harold D. and Rhoda N. Roberts Memorial Lecture Fund.
Annie Leonard is the author and host of the online film, "The Story of Stuff," an expose on the hidden environmental and social costs of current systems of production and consumption. The film has generated more than seven million views in 200 countries and territories since its launch in December 2007. She has spent nearly two decades investigating and organizing on environmental health and justice issues. She is now working on a book version of the film, to be published in March 2010. Sponsored by the Timothy C. Linnemann Lecture on the Environment and the Colorado College Environmental Science Program.
The sale features handcrafted works presented by the artist or craftperson. Approximately 60 juried, professional community artists sell alongside Colorado College students. The sale features fiber arts, jewelry, pottery, woodworking, glass, prints, photography, painting, book arts, greeting cards, handmade soaps and lotions and leather. Sponsored by the Colorado College Arts and Crafts Program.
Under the direction of ensemble director I. Made Lasmawan, Colorado College students will perform on Balinese instruments. Dance students will accompanying the musicians. Sponsored by the Colorado College music department.
This Christian candlelight service of scripture readings, congregational carols and musical presentations to observe Advent has been held for 48 years in Shove Memorial Chapel. Modeled after the traditional service at King’s College, Cambridge, England, the celebration reflects the non-denominational nature of the CC chaplains’ office. Musical selections, including "And Every Stone Shall Cry Out" arranged by Bob Chilcott, will be presented by the CC Chamber Chorus and Collegium Musicum instrumental ensemble. College Organist Frank Shelton will play the pipe organ in a sanctuary filled with poinsettias and candles. Sponsored by the chaplains’ office and the Christian communities at Colorado College.
The third in a series of Sugar Salons, "Sugar Inspirations" celebrates sugar-inspired art and literature. Featured artists will discuss sugar-related works, students will give a sugar-lift printing demonstration and authors will read sugar-inspired poetry and prose. To acknowledge the importance of sugar to the holiday season, the event will also feature a sugarplum tasting and possibly an appearance from the Sugar Plum Fairy. Sponsored by the Robert & Ruby Priddy Charitable Trust and the Colorado College Cultural Attractions Fund.
The Colorado College Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Daniel Brink, will perform.
Poets Conrad and Jane Hilberry read from their work. His books include "After Music" and "Sorting the Smoke." She’s the winner of the Colorado Book Award for "Body Painting." Sponsored by the Colorado College English department with the support of the MacLean Visiting Writers Endowment.
Two innovative finger-style guitarists will be performing a concert (7:30pm - 10:30pm, Shove Chapel) and having a guitar workshop (1pm - 3pm, Sacred Grounds). Both Rose and Jones play instrumental acoustic guitar pieces and are influenced by everything from American folk and blues to Indian Ragas. Sponsored by Life of the Mind Grant
The Back Row is Colorado College’s all-male a cappella group. The group has won numerous national awards for its music and is known for its high energy performances. The Winter Show is the culmination of this semester’s work. It is a show for all ages and will feature a cappella covers of everything from Simon and Garfunkel to Sublime.
