French movie night : The 400 Blows ( with English subtitles)Film: French movie night : The 400 Blows ( with English subtitles)
The 400 Blows (French: Les Quatre Cents Coups) is a 1959 French film directed by François Truffaut. The film won the 1959 Best Director prize at the Cannes Film Festival. One of the defining films of the French New Wave, it displays many of the characteristic traits of the movement. The story revolves around Antoine Doinel, an ordinary adolescent in Paris, who is thought by his parents and teachers to be a trouble maker. A semi-autobiographical film, reflecting events of Truffauts and his friends lives, its style amounts to Truffauts personal history of French film — most notably a scene borrowed wholesale from Jean Vigos Zéro de conduite. It is dedicated to the man who became his spiritual father, André Bazin, who died just as the film was about to be shot. Besides being a character study, the film is an exposé of the injustices of the treatment of juvenile offenders in France at the time.

The Duchess of Malfi by John Webster. The Department of Drama and Dance presents Webster's classic play on Thursday-Saturday, May 7-9, at 7:30pm in Norberg Studio A at the Edith Kinney Gaylord Cornerstone Arts Center. The play is a meditation on power--political, religious, and sexual--and presents a bleak, violent, and fascinating world couched in some of the most beautiful language ever put on the stage. The Duchess of Malfi's description of a world bereft of moral values on its highest levels fascinates and scandalizes us to this day.
