Visiting Artist Lecture: Brian MolanphyLecture: Visiting Artist Lecture: Brian Molanphy
Brian Molanphy will give a lecture on his work in Room 21 of Packard Hall. Brian studied painting, papermaking, and bookmaking as an undergraduate at Colorado College, attended Penn State to complete an MFA in ceramics, and was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to study the porcelain of the National Manufactory of Sevres, France. Brian writes about his pots: “I would like to make objects that suggest sometimes fullness, sometimes emptiness, through their formal elements. I try to exploit the flow of clay in the overall form or in the surface qualities. A double-walled cup may appear on the outside to have the potential to contain a lot. If the containing space is limited to the volume provided by the smaller inner wall, however, then the cup is just full of itself. This can be a surprising, absurd, and beautiful thing.” Sponsored by The Art Department and the Harold E. Berg Endowment Fund.

Italian Movie Night Presents the 3rd Best Film of All Time: 8½ Film: Italian Movie Night Presents the 3rd Best Film of All Time: 8½
First released in Italy on February 14, 1963, 8½ received virtually unanimous acclaim with reviewers hailing Fellini as "a genius possessed of a magic touch, a prodigious style." 8½ won two Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Costume Design. Acknowledged as a highly influential classic, it was ranked 3rd best film of all time in a 2002 poll of film directors conducted by the British Film Institute. The title is in keeping with Fellini's self-reflexive theme - the making of his eighth-and-a-half film. 8½ is about the struggles involved in the creative process, both technical and personal, and the problems artists face when expected to deliver something personal and profound with intense public scrutiny, on a constricted schedule, while simultaneously having to deal with their own personal relationships. It is, in a larger sense, about finding true personal happiness in a difficult, fragmented life. Italian novelist and critic Alberto Moravia described the film's protagonist, Guido Anselmi, as "obsessed by eroticism, a sadist, a masochist, a self-mythologizer, an adulterer, a clown, a liar and a cheat. He's afraid of life and wants to return to his mother's womb... In some respects he resembles Leopold Bloom, the hero of James Joyce’s Ulysses, and we have the impression that Fellini has read and contemplated this book. The film is introverted, a sort of private monologue interspersed with glimpses of reality… Fellini’s dreams are always surprising and, in a figurative sense, original, but his memories are pervaded by a deeper, more delicate sentiment.” Sponsored by the romance languages department.

The Ludlow Massacre: History, Memory, WritingSymposium: The Ludlow Massacre: History, Memory, Writing
Since news of southern Colorado Coal strikes first made national headlines in the early twentieth century, writers have put accounts, stories, interpretations, and memories into writing in the press, in photographs, in poetry, in monographs. Writers have called the Ludlow Massacre of April 20, 1914, which effectively ended the southern Colorado Coal war, the bloodiest labor conflict in American history. Recently, the Ludlow Massacre has engendered a series of books—history, journalism, poetry, fiction—that are bringing events and the arguments about them back into light. This symposium on Ludlow will raise questions about what actually happened on that day (and before and after), how we know, how we tell the tale. In panel discussions and workshops the symposium will ask us to deal with narrations of events, problems in teaching the history, and writing about it. Speakers will include: • Thomas Andrews—Assistant Professor of History, University of Colorado Denver. Author of "Killing for Coal: America’s Deadliest Labor War" (2008). • Anne Hyde—Professor of History and Director of Hulbert Center for Southwest Studies, Colorado College. • Scott Martelle—Journalist. Author of "Blood Passion: The Ludlow Massacre and Class War in the American West" (2008). • David Mason—Professor of English, Colorado College. Author of "Ludlow, a verse novel" (2007). • Maria Montoya—Associate Professor of History, New York University. Author of "Translating Property: The Maxwell Land Grant and the Conflict over Land in the American West, 1840–1940" (2002). At work on a book on the Colorado Fuel & Iron, Co.. • Zeese Papanikolas—Writer. Author of "Buried Unsung: Louis Tikas and the Ludlow Massacre" (1991). Please find more information about the symposium at www.ludlowsymposium.wordpress.com Sponsored by the Demarest Lloyd Lecture Fund, the William Jovanovich Lecture in Public Affairs Fund, and The Hulbert Center for Southwest Studies.

'Luxury Liner'Film: "Luxury Liner"
In 1976, Indian Creek was a little-known, dried-up, ancient riverbed in southeastern Utah. But in that year the impossible became the possible: Earl Wiggins climbed Supercrack, a 300-foot vertical sandstone fracture from the ground up. Indian Creek is now considered one of the finest international climbing destinations in the world. Luxury Liner is the story of a bold man behind an unthinkable idea. It pairs historical footage of the first ascent of Supercrack with recent interviews that reminisce on an earlier time, when climbing necessitated fearlessness, confidence, finesse and humility. When Wiggins's ropemates Ed Webster and Bryan Becker return to Supercrack thirty years later to share memories, they come upon wisdom: simplicity is at the heart of climbing, even today, and the audacious foolishness of the past continues to resonate into the future. Sponsored by the CACC & Mountain Chalet.

Dagmar Celeste: Discerning the Call of God: A Discussion of Religious VocationPanel: Dagmar Celeste: Discerning the Call of God: A Discussion of Religious Vocation
On Tuesday, April 21, at 4:30pm, join Dagmar Celeste and a panel of local religious leaders in Slocum Commons as they discuss the process of discerning a call to religious vocation. Local religious leaders joining the discussion will be: Fr. Anthony Karbo, priest of Holy Theophany Orthodox Church; Kate Holbrook, Assistant Chaplain of Colorado College; and Stephen Handen, director of Mesa Housing. Professor David Weddle, Department of Religion, will moderate the panel. In 2002, Dagmar, former wife of CC President Dick Celeste, announced that she had secretly been ordained a priest of the Roman Catholic Church. She was one of seven women ordained by Argentinian Independent Catholic Bishop Rómulo Antonio Braschi on a boat in the Danube River, making her the first female American Roman Catholic to call herself a priest. Ms. Celeste was subsequently excommunicated by the Roman Catholic Church, which does not recognize the validity of the ordination of a woman. She is a long standing professional Life Balance Coach who developed an individualized three-month coaching process designed to empower one to discover a life worth living by embracing the life one is truly called to. Sponsored by The Department of Religion, Feminist and Gender Studies, the Sheffer Fund for Roman Catholic Studies and the Chaplains' Office
