Sounds of drilling, digging, and cement pouring will soon be replaced by a symphony of French horns, violas, and electric guitars. Fencing and construction signs on the corner of Cascade and Cache La Poudre will vanish, revealing new art and music classrooms — thanks to the renovation of the Sperry S. and Ella Graber Packard Hall of Music and Art.

The Packard Hall project is well underway. The project combines renovation work — including the addition of a new handicapped-accessible elevator to the art tower — with a two-story addition of approximately 10,000 square feet, to give the building a total square footage of 64,700.

Gary Reynolds, director of facilities services, noted that the addition will consolidate some music functions, provide much-needed space for the art department, and offer rehearsal space for use by the music department and others. It also includes a new classroom, offices for the music department, and ancillary support spaces.

The project, with a $4.6 million price tag, was made possible by donors’ gifts including a $4 million grant from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.

The construction is divided into two phases — building the addition and moving the music department into it, and remodeling the existing building. The construction of the foundation and superstructure started in the fall; the remodeling phase is scheduled to be finished in October.
