Workshop: Enrich Your Life: Paper Sculpture
In this workshop, we will take natural paper fibers and transform them through sculptural papermaking into three-dimensional objects. Students will be led through the basics of fiber preparation and paper sheet formation, will construct basic armatures filled with sand, and then cast the paper over the armatures to create unique objects. Students will leave with the knowledge of how to create similar sculptures at home in their own kitchens. All experience levels welcome. Film: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
Join Colorado College adjunct professor of literature Lisa Hughes class on comparative literature for a viewing of this 1966 movie. Inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus (251-183 B.C.) - specifically Pseudolus, Miles Gloriosus, and Mostellaria - it tells the bawdy story of a slave named Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door.  Class: Enrich Your Life: The Redemptrix Archetype: The Second Coming
This seminar explores the feminine archetype of the "redemptrix" and its relationship with the Christian concept of the Second Coming. The discussion will be based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale "Twelve Brothers" and the Nordic fairy tale "Twelve Swans." Both fairy tales relate to how the younger sister redeems her brothers from their enchantment into birds (into ravens in "Twelve Brothers" and into swans in "Twelve Swans"). Attention is given to the psychological meaning of the various symbols in the fairy tales. In particular, attention will be given to how the fairy tales outline the feminine way of individuation. Participants should read both fairy tales and bring to class copies of the fairy tales. Includes lunch. Taught by CC visiting professor Ramon Lopez-Reyes. A diverse, international lineup of professional dancers who make up our faculty celebrate an array of dance styles, energies and ideas. New to the gala this year is Martha Graham Company member Yuko Suzuki who will perform the 1930's Graham work "Lamentation." Eric Handman will perform a dynamic piece together with his wife, Pamela Geber. Returning artists include Intuit, an alumni dance company from San Francisco and the National Chu-Bei Senior High School dancers from Taiwan. CC alumna Sara Joel will perform a bubble chair solo (if you don't know what that is, you have to come to find out!) while seven months pregnant, her second pregnant premiere at the Faculty Gala!  Lecture: Bilingual Printing: The Cherokee Phoenix and a New Art Institute in North Carolina
Frank Brannon, visiting Summer Session artist teaching at the Press at Colorado College, will offer a slide-illustrated talk on the history and future of printing among the Cherokee people. In this lecture, he will discuss the Cherokee Phoenix, the newspaper printed before the removal of the tribe in the 1820s from its Appalachian homeland, in relation to the current development of a letterpress printing studio at the Oconaluftee Institute for Cultural Arts in Cherokee, North Carolina. This event invites discussion among those interested in book arts and Native American history as well as the history and technology of printing. Sponsored by the Robert G.  Class: Enrich Your Life: Drawing the Line on the American Dream: U.S. Immigration Policy in the Obama Era
Immigration reform is emerging as a hot political issue not only in Colorado, but nationwide. In this evening course, professors Eric Popkin and Hector Suarez will discuss recent history of immigration legislation, focusing on failed border enforcement strategies; the factors that propel migration from Mexico and Central America with special attention given to trade agreements; demand for immigrant labor by U.S. businesses; the current process for immigrating legally into the U.S.; and immigration reform legislation to be considered in Colorado and nationally. Participants will have short readings in advance to prepare for the course, and the opportunity to discuss the issues in a small group format.  Concert: Sam Cogburn in Concert
Sam is enrolled in the guitar program at Colorado State University-Pueblo, where he studies with Benjamin Cantu. He has taken master classes with Manuel Barrueco, Martha Masters, Denis Azabagic, Ricardo Iznaola, and Maso Ito. Sam has attended the Bowdoin International Music Festival in Maine and the Hawaii Guitar Class in the summer of 2008. He teaches guitar at Rhythm Street in Pueblo. Sam will appear as a finalist in the American String Teacher's Association National Solo Competition in Atlanta in March 2009.  Class: Enrich Your Life: Regarding Emma: Austen vs. the Filmmakers (Part II)
Jane Austen's novels have been the target of adaptations for almost two centuries, from the 19th century London stage to Hollywood and the BBC. Why? The class will look at the novel that some critics call Austen's greatest, "Emma," and ask why its characters, themes, and ideas have fascinated so many readers. Then we will look at the ways these materials have been understood, misunderstood, and recast by various films and TV miniseries. In particular we will study the Gwyneth Paltrow film version (1996), the Kate Beckinsale BBC version (1997), and the first-rate (in my view) "Clueless" (1995). Students should read and bring to class the Penguin edition, available in the Colorado College bookstore. The class will break for lunch and conclude with afternoon tea. Taught by George Butte.  Theater: Face the City
An edgy, contemporary "Dead Poets Society" meets "Stand By Me," "Face the City" is a live rock, multimedia theatrical experience about an idealistic dreamer who leaves his high school past only to find roads of disillusionment in the real world. The last night of a high school dream is celebrated by The Painter, The Journalist, and The Composer as told by The Performer. The four teenage boys embark on a journey that takes them into the forbidden underbelly of East L.A., a fantasy flight on the "Rock Dragon" and an ascent up "The Bridge" that serves as a metaphor throughout the show. "Face the City" is the inspirational true story about redemption and the recapturing of innocence in a society that so readily tries to define who you are.  Class: Enrich Your Life: Global Climate Change in Your Backyard
The planet is warming fast with consequences to ecosystems, and human infrastructure and economy. Who is responsible? What are the consequences for us here in Colorado? In this community course we will address the earth's energy balance, transfer and distribution of heat on the planet, the carbon cycle, local and global biosphere-atmosphere-climate feedbacks, and the impact of these on ecosystem services we rely on. This unique course will be taught through a series of short lectures, discussions, and hands-on exercises at the treeline of Pikes Peak, where the course instructor Miro Kummel researches the impacts of climate change on treeline movement and functioning of local ecosystems.
