Subject: New network prep for Mon 3/26 - allow a
bit of extra time
***please consider printing out this email and
taking it in to the College with you tomorrow***
Dear Faculty,
Welcome back from Spring Break!
We are happy to report that the campus has been successfully
“cut over” to the new network!
However, as part of the cut over process, please remember
that when you log in to your computer for the first time
since you left campus, you will need to “register”
your computer online, in order for you to be able to access
the Internet, your email, and your network drives.
To register your computer:
1. Log in on your computer, like you always do.
2. Open up an Internet browser, like you were going to a
web page.
3. You will be “redirected” to a registration
page. (This may take a few seconds).
4. By your computer (or on your office door) is a set of
brief “how to”
instructions for the registration process. If you can’t
find the instructions, ask your office staff for a copy.
Registration should only take a minute or two, and is pretty
straight forward.
5. Once you’ve registered, you’ll be instructed
to close your browser window, and to wait a minute for the
registration process to finalize.
6. To make sure your network drives and email all open smoothly,
we recommend that you then reboot your computer.
Consider coming to campus a little earlier than normal
tomorrow, to help the registration process go smoothly for
you!
Please note that you may need to get the laptop or computer
in your smart classroom registered as well, as there were
classrooms/storage areas we couldn’t access on Friday,
due to conference use of many of the classrooms and/or people
not being available in departments. (If you log in, open
a browser, and are able to see a “normal” web
page (like the CC home page, or CNN), then that computer
has already been registered).
If you experience any problems with the registration process,
Academic Technology Services, User Services, and Network
Systems and Services staff will be out in your buildings
in full force tomorrow morning, starting at
8 a.m. (The person/people assigned to your building are
listed below this message).
But considering how many people may require support in
a very short period of time we ask:
1. That you try the registration process yourself as a first
attempt. It really should only take a few minutes of your
time.
2. That if you experience difficulty or have questions,
talk to your office staff as a “next step.”
Most of the academic office staff have already experienced/been
a part of the registration process, and might be able to
assist you.
3. If you still need assistance, then try to find the ATS/Network/User
Services person that is assigned to assist people in your
building.
4. And if all else fails, then call the Help Desk at 389-6449
(or email them at HelpDesk@coloradocollege.edu).
People will be diligently manning the phones and scanning
the Help Desk email account. But because we anticipate a
potentially higher call volume than usual, you may need
to leave a voicemail message. Someone *will* return your
call or email as soon as possible.
One last note: because many of our network resources and
servers are still on the “old” network, you
really won’t see any performance gains on the new
network until everything is cut over. So don’t be
disappointed by this careful, phased approach! Everything
will be cut over to the new network by graduation. The new
wireless network will then be implemented over the summer
months. A comprehensively faster, more reliable, more accessible,
more powerful network will be up and running for Fall 2007!
Best,
Marla
