Subject: Network Upgrade - things to know when you return from spring break

To the Campus Community,

Network cut overs will be happening during spring break – that means later this week, and most of next week! Please read below, and check out the network upgrade website for more detailed information (http://www.coloradocollege.edu/networkupgrade).

Starting Thursday, March 15th and continuing through Spring Break we are going to "cut over" from the old equipment to the new in almost every building on campus. This means three important things:

Outages
There will be network “outages,” building by building, as we disconnect computers from the old network switches and connect them to the new ones. Check http://www.coloradocollege.edu/networkupgrade/theplan.html for specifics. Most buildings will be “down” for a half-day window (e.g., 8-12 or 1-5).

Computer Registration
You will need to do a brief computer registration process as part of the migration to the new network. We will be around during spring break to assist with this process, and if we miss you, we’ll leave a brief sheet of instructions in every office / department.

Realistic Expectations
Although your computers will be hooked into the new network, there will still be many devices and servers running on the old network. Until all network-based devices are moved over to the new network (scheduled for mid-May), you will not see any noticeable performance increases.

The spring break migration will NOT impact services such as email, GoWest, H:\ and I:\ drives, etc.

As with any project of this scope and complexity, please know that there could be unexpected issues (such as problems printing, or accessing specialized servers). However, keep in mind that we will be doing all that we can to prevent or mitigate these, and if any problems arise, we will be staffed to address them expediently.

Thank you, and have a good spring break,
