Subject: Reminder: The Great Server Migration is TOMORROW 4/19/07

This is just a quick and friendly reminder that we'll be doing cutovers of our 100 or so campus servers tomorrow afternoon from 12:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.  If we could ask a favor of many of you, since you have subscribed to this list in order to be informed and to help us "spread the word," please share this reminder with your department and colleagues.  We are mindful that it's not really a block "break," but rather a different pace of working, but we hope that we have allowed for adequate time to close out Block 7 and prepare for Block 8 - all given that we can't take the network down for a planned outage during an actual block itself.  We will be restoring servers and services in priority order tomorrow, with the greatest campus impact items coming back online first, so watch for Internet access and email and fileservers and library databases to return earlier than 6:30 p.m.

 

As work-arounds for the afternoon tomorrow, we suggest that folks focus on network-based work in the morning, and that they consider taking late lunch breaks at 12:30-ish and see what network services have returned by mid-afternoon.  Otherwise, working from home or working from a local establishment with free Internet connectivity might be good options.  Scheduling meetings might be a productive way to wait out the down time.  And there is always the mountain of snail mail and filing and catching up on newsletters and articles that one can do!  :)
