Subject: Planned Outage on Thursday, April 19th
Importance: High
To the Colorado College Community,
We are currently preparing for the next big phase of the network upgrade project: the great server migration. We have already moved some 9,000 ports, and registered some 3,900 computers/printers/etc., and so the campus server fleet (approximately 100 servers) is next in line.
Accordingly, there will be a planned network & systems outage next Thursday, April 19, between 12:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
We wanted to let you know in advance so that you can plan your work flow for block break. Please make sure that you save and close out of any files by 12:30 (note: files saved locally on your hard drive will be accessible during this outage, but files on networked drives, such as H: and I:, will not be accessible).
You may be asking yourself, why Thursday afternoon? This outage window will best serve the campus community for several reasons. First, we need a variety of vendor support (which is both difficult and expensive to obtain after regular business hours). Second, we want to allow for closure on Block 7. Third, we want to allow for adequate testing and preparation for a smooth start to Block 8. We thank everyone in advance for their patience and understanding, as there is never an “ideal” time to stop network & system services.
Additional update: AIM and iChat instant messaging users will be happy to note that their favorite IM program is working again. The network tweak also corrected several issues connecting to secure websites (e.g., banking, e-commerce, etc.). As always, though, please let us know if you experience any problems.
