William A. Bell Papers, Part 1, Ms 0257

Biographical Sketch

William A. Bell was born in Clonmel county, Tipperary, Ireland April 26, 1841, the son of Dr. William Bell, a London physician. Dr. William A. Bell took his degree as doctor of medicine at the University of Cambridge and afterward practiced at St. George's hospital in London.

He visited Colorado for the first time in connection with the Kansas Pacific survey of 1867, when he first met General William J.Palmer, with whom he formed a life-long association. Under General Palmer and the association with Colonel D.C. Dodge and others he assisted in founding and constructing the Denver & Rio Grande railroad, of which he was for many years vice president. For many years he was an important agent for placing securities and bonds in England for General Palmers' numerous ventures.

He also was a founder of the Colorado Coal & Iron company in 1879, which turned out the first iron and the first rails in the state. This company later consolidated with the Colorado Fuel company, controlled by J.C. Osgood to form the Colorado Fuel & Iron company.

Dr. Bell was associated with the founding and development of Colorado Springs, Manitou, Durango and other towns in Colorado, and with the construction of the Antlers Hotel in Colorado Springs. He built his home "Briarhurst" in 1889 upon the ruins of a former residence.

William A. Bell was the author of "New Tracks in North America" describing the Kansas Pacific survey. This was published in 1869. In 1891 he read a paper before the British association in London upon the mineral resources of Colorado, afterward printed in the Scottish Geographical magazine for October of that year.

Dr. Bell left Colorado for the last time March 1, 1920. He made an address January 28, 1920, at a dinner given to employees of the Denver & Rio Grande railroad at the Union station in Denver. The address forms a record of the early development of that system.

William A. Bell , beginning with his involvement with General Palmer, had a career as a 19th century real estate and industrial developer. Correspondence relating to that career are in this collection.

Dr. Bell was married to the former Cara Georgina Whitmore Scovell in England and they made their home in Colorado Springs. A busy family social life attended Dr. Bell's ever increasing American business. Dr. Bell and his family, which included three daughters and one son returned to England to live in 1890, with frequent visits to Manitou.

William A. Bell Papers, Part 2, Ms0306

Scope and Content

The collection consists of letters written to and from Dr. William Bell. They range in date from early 1870 to 1891 but are concentrated in the years 1871 and 1872. The subjects of the letters are varying, although most center around the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad and Dr. Bell's other business ventures, including:
The National Land Company, The Central Colorado Improvement Company, Porter, Bell, and Company, and The Colorado Cheese Company in Wet Mountain Valley.

The letters dealing with the formation of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad demonstrate the extensive planning for the construction of the railroad south of Denver. They also illustrate Dr. Bell's friendship and partnership with General William J. Palmer and William S. Rosencrans (the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico.) Many of the letters are concerned with pooling money for the venture, others regard the gathering of supplies and support for the railroad to materialize.

The collection also contains numerous personal letters written to Dr. Bell. There are several letters from his mother, father, and uncles as well as many personal letters throughout the collection from business peers. There are also letters written to Bell concerning the construction of Briarhurst, his mansion in Manitou Springs.

Additional references on Dr. Bell's life and his business ventures are found in Marshal Sprauge's Newport in the Rockies and Herbert Brayer's, William Blackmore, A Case Study in the Economic Development of the West. Additional information concerning the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad is available in MS 0257, a collection of letters between General Palmer and Dr. Bell concentrating on the developing railroad.
