Use an INDEX or ABSTRACT Database

An INDEX or ABSTRACT collects information about articles from hundreds or thousands of journals and magazines and puts that information into a database. Tutt Library subscribes to many, many indexes/abstracts to help you find articles on your topic. Want to see the entire list of them? Click here.

Here are some databases that cover pretty much any subject:

• Google Scholar
• LEXIS-NEXIS Academic Universe

Develop a Search Strategy

Once you find a database that suits your needs, you’ll type in keywords, subject headings, authors’ names, or other terms to bring up articles that match your topic.

You can usually search by:

• simple keywords and phrases
• specific subject headings
• authors’ names
• journal title
• other “fields”

In addition, there are usually ways to limit your search by fulltext of the article or what’s available in Tutt Library.

Reading Citations

Once you’ve done your search, the database will bring up a list of brief records that match your search. These brief records will give you citations to the articles. Click here for instructions on how to read a citation.

Getting Your Hands on the Article

Articles are available many different ways:

Full-text

Many databases offer PDF or HTML full-text access to articles. Look for the full text option on the database you are using. If it’s not available full text, look for an "ILL" icon. If we don’t own the journal, you can order the article right from the database!

Find Journals

This is the place to find all the journals that Tutt Library has access to, electronic or paper or microform. Once you have a citation to a journal article, you can search the Find Journals list by the title of the journal you need. If it’s not listed, we don’t have access and you need to request it through Interlibrary Loan.

In databases, look for the Tiger Paw!  

If the library has access to the full text for an article, Tutt Link will take you directly there. If the library does have not have access to the full text, Tutt Link will help you check TIGER for a print copy or point you to Interlibrary Loan.

Tutt Library Periodicals

The TIGER Catalog will tell you whether Tutt Library owns the print journal, but Gold Rush gives the most up-to-date and accurate account of journals we have access to, no matter what the format.

InterLibrary Loan

If the article is not online, and not held by Tutt Library, you may order a copy from another library from InterLibrary Loan.
