Today’s technique to practice:

Finding Books

• Search the Tiger Catalog for books available in Tutt Library.

Search TIGER for Keyword Title Author Subject Journal Title Go

Try searching “hiv or aids*” and “africa*”.

• Search Prospector for books available from academic and public libraries in Colorado. Materials can come in as few as 3 days.

• Search Google Books to identify books by words in the text.

Coverage: 1988 - current

Provides access to basic journal index and some full text resources. Subject coverage is general and broad. Shows CC holdings.

Coverage: late 1800's - most recent 5 years

Archival access to many scholarly periodicals. Jstor does not cover the most recent three years of most journals.

Coverage: 1915 - current

Articles, books, conference proceedings, government documents, book chapters, and statistical directories about public affairs.

Finding Statistical/Country Specific Information

The Economist Intelligence Unit Database Access

Coverage: 1996 - current

Current political and economic analysis of 123 countries. If not automatically logged in, click on Enterprise Client Access to enter the site. Note: Access to this resource may not work using Internet Explorer 7. Firefox 3 may need special configuration. Try Internet Explorer 6 or Firefox 2. If a security certificate error occurs, click Yes or OK to proceed.

Coverage: 1978 - current

Published annually by the World Bank, these reports address various issues pertinent to the changing development landscape.

UN Statistics Division Common Database

Coverage: 1958 - current

Statistical compilation for the United Nations. Contains selected data series from 30 specialized international sources, including labor, agricultural, nutritional and industrial statistics. Years of coverage vary with data series/countries selected.

Coverage: 1960 - current

500 time-series indicators for 210 economies plus regional and income groups. Retrievable data in spreadsheet format, display maps and graphs, and export data. Note: Access to this resource may not work using Internet Explorer 7. Try Internet Explorer 6 or Firefox.

Finding Journal Articles in Subject Specific Databases

Try searching a subject specific database from Databases by Subject for more articles from individual disciplines.

For example, try searching MEDLINE listed under Databases for Medicine, for the topic “sudan* and water quality”.

Finding Full Text Versions of Articles

When searching article indexing databases, sometimes the full text of the article you need is not provided to you by the database. Or you have identified a citation in a bibliography or footnote and need to find the full text. There are two ways of finding the full text of any article that you need.

1. Check Find Journals to see if Tutt Library subscribes to an electronic version of your journal or magazine or if we own databases which may have your article in full text. Find Journals a.k.a Tutt Link is available next to the citations in most of our databases.

1. Request an ILLiad/Interlibrary Loan of your article directly from your database (use button or hotlink) or log into ILLiad and fill out an Interlibrary Loan Request Form. (Articles can come in as few as 24-48 hours.) You must be registered with ILLiad for either method to work – see First Time User Registration for Interlibrary Loan.
