General Resources

Grove Music Online

Use this resource to locate background information on specific types of music (search by the name of the composer if you know it, or by the genre of music). Contains good bibliographies and links to other Internet resources. Provides sources on classical music, ethnomusicology, opera, jazz, and much more. Search by name of country, ethnic group, or tribe; name of musical instrument; genre or music; or composer. Articles from specialist dictionaries such as The New Grove Dictionary of Opera and The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz, second edition, are available via a link from the primary article. Grove Music Online is part of the Oxford Music Online database.

The equivalent of Groves Music for American music. Although Groves Music will have articles on American music, the articles found in Groves American, in spite of its publication date, are often more thorough. Scholarly approach, many illustrations, some bibliographies.

The New Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments, edited by Sadie (1984).

An encyclopedia of musical instruments of the world. Although it has a Western emphasis, you will find useful articles here. Scholarly approach, many illustrations, some bibliographies.

The Database Of Recorded American Music

Provides streamed audio recordings of over 1,500 CDs (9,800 compositions). The basis for the current collection is the diverse catalogue of American music recordings by New World Records. Including selections from folk to opera, Native American to jazz, 19th century classical to early rock, musical theater, contemporary, electronic and beyond, this basic collection is continually augmented by other labels known to support the work of composers and scholars. Includes liner note and essays.

Subject-specific Resources

The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music, advisory editors, Nettl and Stone (1998-2002).
Ref. ML100 .G16, vs. 1-10. Music Library and Tutt Library

Each volume treats a different region of the world in several articles per volume. A sound CD accompanies each volume. The final volume includes a bibliography, discography, and filmography for each region treated by the preceeding volumes, as well as a glossary covering all volumes. The only printed source of its kind!

Handbook of North American Indians, William C. Sturtevant, general editor, (1978-2004).

This work documents information about North American indigenous peoples, including cultural and physical aspects of the people, language family, history, and prehistory. The series utilizes noted authorities for each topic. The set is illustrated, indexed, and has extensive bibliographies.

Images and information on musical instruments from around the world.

Ethnomusicology Musical Instrument Collection, from the University of Washington Ethnomusicology Division Archives (1998-2004).
