Evaluating Your Sources

Many of the Tutt Library databases index only scholarly, peer reviewed journal articles but some include articles from popular magazines as well. Some of the databases provide a means of limiting your search to scholarly, peer reviewed journals, others don’t. Please review the Vodka Ad Test criteria for determining if an article is from a scholarly journal. Finding Books

• Search the Tiger Catalog for books available in Tutt Library.

Search TIGER for Keyword Title Author Subject Journal Title Go

Try searching “college student*” and “gender*”.

• Search Prospector for books available from academic and public libraries in Colorado. Materials can come in as few as 3 days.

• Search Google Books to identify books by words in the text.

Finding Journal Articles

Academic Search Premier

Coverage: 1988 - current

Provides access to basic journal index and some full text resources. Subject coverage is general and broad. Shows CC holdings.

Gender Studies Database

Coverage: pre-1972 - current

Combines the Women’s Studies International and Men’s Studies databases with sexual diversity issues and gender-engaged scholarship. Source documents include professional journals, conference papers, books, book chapters, government reports, discussion and working papers, theses & dissertations, and freely available full text articles & documents on the Web.

Communication & Mass Media Complete

Coverage: Early 20th century - current

Covers all areas of communication and mass media. Includes fulltext for over 200 titles and citations to research journals, as well as major journalism reviews, recent encyclopedias, and handbooks in the area of communications studies. Some journals are indexed back as far as the early decades of the 20th century.

SocINDEX

Coverage: 1895 - current

Indexes core sociology journals dating back to 1895. Use in place of Sociological Abstracts.

Social Sciences Abstracts

Coverage: 1983 - current

International, English-language periodicals in sociology, anthropology, geography, economics, political science, and law.

Finding Journal Articles in Subject Specific Databases

Try searching a subject specific database from Databases by Subject for more articles from individual disciplines.

For example, try searching MLA International Bibliography listed under Databases for Literature, for the topic “text messag*”.

Finding Full Text Versions of Articles

When searching article indexing databases, sometimes the full text of the article you need is not provided to you by the database. Or you have identified a citation in a bibliography or footnote and need to find the full text. There are two ways of finding the full text of any article that you need.

1. Check Find Journals to see if Tutt Library subscribes to an electronic version of your journal or magazine or if we own databases which may have your article in full text. Find Journals a.k.a Tutt Link is available next to the citations in most of our databases.

1. Request an ILLiad/Interlibrary Loan of your article directly from your database (use button or hotlink) or log into ILLiad and fill out an Interlibrary Loan Request Form. (Articles can come in as few as 24-48 hours.) You must be registered with ILLiad for either method to work – see First Time User Registration for Interlibrary Loan.
