What is a zine?
According to Wikipedia, "A zine - an abbreviation of the word magazine - is most commonly a small circulation, non-commercial publication of original or appropriated texts and images." It is pronounced "zeen" (like "scene"). You can read a lot more about zines at http://zinewiki.com/.
Inspired by Barnard College, Colorado College began collecting zines in 2005.
Collection Development Policy
Colorado College will purchase zines published in Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, and Wyoming. When possible, we will purchase two copies of each zine, one for preservation in Special Collections, one for a browsing collection. When we are only able to get one copy, it will go into Special Collections.
We will consider donations of zines made in states outside our collecting list -- query us using the email below.
As long as at least one issue of a zine is published in our area, we will endeavor to collect all issues, even if some issues are published outside that area.
We will define zines broadly to include almost any self-published item that is produced in editions of multiple copies (i.e., not artists' books or similar one-of-a-kind items). We will purchase zines produced in the states we are collecting regardless of subject matter or the apparent quality of the publication.
To support the collection, we will purchase books and other materials on zines and "zine culture" for the circulating stacks. We intend to link those materials to the CC Zine Collection by means of a local subject heading.
Any zine review publications, catalogs, or correspondence related to collecting the zines should become part of the CC Zine Collection.
Do you publish a zine you think we'd like? Email tuttspec@coloradocollege.edu.
