TLC-ATS Technology Series

Wednesday, October 9.  Course web pages.”  Over 85 CC professors have participated in one of our 2-day faculty institutes on how to develop course web pages.  At this lunch-seminar, several faculty members displayed their course web pages, discussed how this technology has enhanced teaching and learning, and shared how they might adapt their web sites in the future.

Wednesday, November 6.  Using Digital Images for Teaching.”  At this lunch-seminar, ATS staff talked about some of the tools available for managing large image collections, as well as demonstrated some pedagogically interesting ways to use images.

Wednesday, December 4.  Using GIS and digital video projects in the classroom.”  About 12 faculty members participated in two new institute topics during the summer of 2002 on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and on digital video editing.  Several of these faculty members shared their experiences integrating maps and video clips into their teaching and assignments.

Monday, January 27.  Free Software for Higher Education: The Voice of the GNU Generation.  The increased communication in our networked world is driving a new paradigm of software development: Open Source.  With open source, you don’t own the mere license; you actually own the source code.  The result is high-quality software, honed by hundreds of developers, available for free.  Manuel Rendon talked about this resource.

Monday, February 24.  Using Digital Video: The Potion for Motion.”  Digital video is a technology useful across a range of disciplines.  In addition to the digital video courses offered by the Art department, digital video has been used in dance, English, and anthropology classes as a medium for student projects, in a French language class as a way of freeing up class time for other activities, and as a way of illustrating experiments too dangerous to perform in a chemistry class.

Monday, March 31.  Literacy in a Digital Age: Fluency with a Flair.”  Information literacy…media literacy…visual literacy…the “buzz words” are out there, but how do these concepts of literacy affect students’ ability to critically evaluate content in an increasingly multimedia research environment?  How are faculty promoting and developing such literacy in their students?  Three different approaches are discussed at this luncheon.
