TLC-ATS Technology Series

Monday, September 24.  “Information Literacy."  A presentation and discussion of current Mellon Foundation efforts, one within the ACM group, led by Susan Ashley, Carol Dickerson, Victor Nelson-Cisneros, and Mark Smith.  

Monday October 15.  “Wireless Classroom Initiative  Faculty members from the Economics and Business Department described the Wireless Classroom Initiative, an initiative designed to experiment with and observe how daily wireless laptop computing in the classroom could enhance the economics curriculum.  

Thursday, November 8  “Course Web Pages  Several faculty members shared their course web pages that were developed during a summer institute on how to develop course web pages.

Wednesday, November 14. Richard Katz, Vice President of EDUCAUSE, presented “Yarns into Gold, or Can Good Research Trump Good Stories?” in order to provoke thought about the question:  As information technologies grow in cost, complexity, and impact on the institutions they serve, can we any longer afford to fly by the collective seat of our pants?

Wednesday, December 5.  “Blackboard: A Classroom Management Tool This session introduced participants to Blackboard, a software suite that permits a faculty member to enter and upload course content (e.g., syllabi, lectures, handouts), construct quizzes/tests, manage student grades, and link to external Web pages. 

Monday, February 11.  “Digital Textbooks.” This discussion focused on the many kinds of digital textbooks that are available, the features and functionality they have, and why you might want to use a digital textbook rather than a paper text.

Tuesday, February 26.  “Effective Use of Classroom Space.”  Participants at this session heard about the merits of designing (and redesigning) classrooms in ways that allow for better integration of computers and multimedia tools with as many practical tips and considerations as possible.

Wednesday, March 6.  “MITC, an Initiative for Liberal Arts Colleges' Collaboration in Teaching and Learning.”  Nancy Millichap, Director of the Midwest Instructional Technology Center (MITC), visited Colorado College to discuss the newly formed center and funding opportunities for consortia projects of instructional technology and information literacy. 

Thursday, April 4.  “Geographic Information Systems (GIS).”  This presentation informed people about GIS and how it is being used by CC faculty members for teaching and research.  Also, an introduction to the capabilities of the hardware and software in the new GIS Lab in the Hulbert Center for Southwest Studies.

Wednesday, May 8.  “Beowulf: Cray Performance at PC Prices.”  This presentation described current developments in the computing world that have resulted in the ability to attain high-performance computing power for the low cost of several PCs.  Beowulf Clusters were explained and a demonstration of CC's own Beowulf Cluster, "Wildcat", was given.
