College students often lament the amount of reading they have to trudge through in such a short time. Reading well at Colorado College demands students read more material with greater critical understanding and comprehension: not only will students read a lot, they will have to demonstrate mastery of the material. Reading in college demands a good deal of effort and time. By reading strategically, however, students can complete their work more efficiently, with greater recall, and with a much improved ability to rally the information they've read. Reading workshops address a range of topics from developing active and critical reading skills to controlling speed, improving the ability to retain and retrieve information, and reading more effectively across the liberal arts curriculum. One of the keys to reading successfully is to develop a flexible set of reading skills – students will need to read differently depending upon the texts and contexts of the assignment. Participating in a reading workshop can help all levels of readers gain control over their pace of reading, enhance their ability to approach difficult or unfamiliar texts, and allow them to gain confidence in a skill that plays a fundamental role in college – and lifelong – learning.
