Alternative Testing
Students with documented disabilities may be eligible for reasonable
and appropriate test accommodations. Accommodations that may be available
to students include, but are not limited to, extended time, a distraction-reduced
test setting, and use of a computer with word processing and/or spell
check. Recommendations for test accommodations are determined by the Disability
Services (DS) staff following review of the documentation of disability
submitted by the student.
Students and faculty should follow the steps below to implement
alternative testing:
- The student is responsible for delivering a letter of accommodation
signed by the Director of DS and the Associate Dean of the College to
professors who teach the courses in which the student is requesting
accommodations. Accommodations recommended by the DS staff are listed
in this letter. Students are responsible for providing appropriate professors
with a copy of the letter of accommodation in a timely manner, preferably
before the beginning of the Block in which accommodations are needed
or as soon as the student determines the need for accommodations in
a course.
- Students and professors should discuss accommodations for each testing
situation to determine whether recommended accommodations are reasonable
and effective. Students and professors are encouraged to contact the
DS staff if consultation is needed regarding testing accommodations.
- Because students with disabilities are best served when accommodated
in the most integrated setting possible, DS strongly encourages professors
to provide test accommodations within their own departments. However,
if it is not possible to provide test accommodations within the academic
department (e.g., the student needs to use assistive technology that
is available only in the Learning Commons), the professor can request
that DS assist in the administration of the test.
The following procedures should be followed to set up a test
administration with DS:
- At least one week prior to the exam, the student should notify DS
of the need to schedule an exam with the DS office. The student must
provide DS with the course name, professor name, date and time of the
exam, and a list of the accommodations needed for the exam.
- The professor should contact the DS staff to provide instructions
for the exam and to make arrangements to deliver the exam.
- DS will administer the exam and return it according to prearranged
instructions.
- If the student does not keep the appointment for the exam, the exam
will be returned to the professor. It is the student’s responsibility
to contact the professor to seek permission to reschedule the exam.
- In accordance with the College’s honor code and policy of having
no proctored exams, DS provides space and accommodations for the exam
but does not serve as an exam proctor.
