Writing Practicum (GS 200)
This course allows students to focus their attention on analytical writing, working either concurrently with their regular block class or as an independent study. The course will be taught in small groups and through individualized consultations. Students at all levels of writing competency and comfort are encouraged to enroll if they want to improve both critical thinking and analytical writing skills. If appropriate, the course will review writing theories, disciplinary conventions, and rhetorical strategies. ¼ unit; Pass/Fail only; COI required; Instructor: Tracy Santa & Carol Emmer.

Written Practice in English as a Second Language (GS 201)
Language practice and support for any student whose native language is
not English. Review of and practice in American academic writing conventions,
mechanics, and English grammar. ½ unit; taught during the fall
and spring semesters; Instructor: Carol Emmer.

Oral Practice in English as a Second Language (GS 202)
Strengthening of oral fluency skills through pronunciation practice, vocabulary
development, and review of idiomatic expressions and two-word verbs. Students
will also participate in classroom discussions and oral presentations.

Peer Tutoring in Writing Courses
Theory and Practice of Peer Tutoring (GS 300)
This course has two purposes: (1) to delve into the complex processes involved in writing and talking about writing; and (2) to prepare students to work as writing consultants in the Colorado College Writing Center. Key course themes include the theory and practice of writing, the theory and practice of tutoring, critical thinking, self-awareness, and team-building. Students will have the opportunity to discuss and apply theories to specific tutoring situations, role play, solve problems in groups, and practice tutoring. Interested students must apply during second block for participation in the class. The course is held annually during half block. ½ unit; Pass/Fail only; COI required; Instructor: Tracy Santa.
Peer Tutoring Practicum (GS 395)
Building on GS 300: Theory and Practice of Peer Tutoring, the practicum serves as a structured apprenticeship through which tutors can apply their theoretical knowledge to practical situations. The course includes collaborating with experienced tutors, practicing tutoring, and reviewing videotaped practice sessions. The course also requires a reflection journal and a theory-into-practice project. This course is mandatory for students who wish to become Writing Center consultants. ½ unit; Pass/Fail only; GS 300 or COI; Instructor: Tracy Santa.
Writing Intensive Courses
Although no conventional composition courses exist at Colorado College, courses designated as Writing Intensive have been designed to attach special importance to writing and revision. These courses provide opportunities for students to continue to improve their writing skills through practice and criticism. The writing component of each course is related to course content and is intended to promote learning within the field as well as greater facility in writing. In some cases, the writing component may emphasize the problems of writing for a particular discipline. Writing Intensive courses have limited enrollment to allow time for individual conferences, small group sessions, and detailed criticism. |
