Somhrita'S JOURNAL

January 2007

The last semester ended with a lot of drama. A large amount of the students faced tremendous travel problems due to one of my favorite things – snow. I was not going home for Christmas anyways, but I definitely got frustrated when I finally boarded my flight to Florida on Christmas Eve. I have no clue how we spent time on the days before that – probably saw movies, watched my friends call a dozen airlines, leave at inhuman times to stand by for flights, order food from outside the college. Some students didn’t get to go home until after Christmas. I was going to spend my vacation with my friend’s family and visit a school friend studying at the University of Miami. I was also to come back for half block to a biology class.

The best part about my vacation was weather that I was so much more used to. It was warm and moist and sunny. For the first time in months, I could get drenched in the rain without catching a cold. And I did just that multiple times. The beach was right across the street from us and I made a few brave attempts at trying to learn to swim. I failed miserably. So I stuck to playing with waves and staying in Jacuzzis. I had a great time playing with my friend’s many animals – 3 cats and 3 dogs.  This would be my first real Christmas celebration. Christmas morning I woke up to many presents and enjoyed superb Christmas dinner later. It was nice to see my friend so happy, teasing her siblings and it reminded me of my family. It’s so strange, every time I see my friends’ families, I keep thinking about my own, maybe because they are so similar despite the different cultures we hail from. One day we met up with a mutual college friend who was also in Florida but had not been able to go home till Christmas day evening. I also went fishing with my friend’s family; that was probably one of the best times I had in the vacation. It was almost like living in a TV movie. New Years was also quite nice, there were fireworks, a nice dinner, a party to go to. The very next day we were headed to Orlando to visit Disneyland and Universal Studios. At Disneyland we met up with yet another college friend. For me, most of the rides left me awestruck even though both my friends told me exactly what they were like. I discovered my acute love for roller coasters when I requested to go on some of them multiple times. The next eventful moment was meeting my school friend who lived down in Miami. Her mom cooked food that tasted like home to me. The first night was spent just catching up on life and watching one of our favorite Hindi movies. The next day she showed me around her campus which was quite large; I was a little shocked to know that there is a resident alligator in their large pond. We went to an art exhibition and explored downtown Miami. The last day I spent with her will always be cherished by me. We went on a movie watching marathon – we saw “Blood Diamond,” “Dreamgirls,” and “Freedom Writers,” back to back.

I returned to half block, refreshed, with fond memories and geared up for Histotechnique. The class was really interesting and intense, like most classes on the Block Plan. We learnt to make permanent slides, and like our professor said, by the end of it, we each had about a hundred slides. Because there were so few people in Loomis during half block, one Friday a bunch of us decided to play hide and seek. We found some outrageous places, and certain people dared to hide inside trash cans. I got to know some people I had never had the chance to spend time with before. And as half block ended, most of my friends and most of the regular college population returned, ready to take on another semester of the Block Plan.
