The campus of Colorado College will have wireless network coverage allowing access to information for students, faculty and staff by September of 2003.

COLORADO COLLEGE WIRELESS CAMPUS NETWORK

President Celeste of the college recently spoke with Alumni and Parent advisors from the high-tech sector. Celeste and the advisors felt an initiative that makes CC a wireless campus is a high priority. Using wireless local-area networks (LANs), and notebook computers equipped with a wireless card, students can tap into course content, databases, reference materials, email, the web and more. All of this can be done anywhere on campus and without being tethered to a data jack.

Standards

The college has decided to work with Cisco Systems to deploy an industry standard 802.11b wireless network. Cisco has been one of the pioneers in wireless networking with integrated security. Currently only Cisco wireless network cards and Apple wireless network cards are supported to maintain a secure wireless environment. The college has the cards available for purchase via the bookstore. The cards may be ordered online from the bookstore and either held for pickup or shipped to your home address.

Wireless Policy

In order to maintain network integrity, security, and reliability, ITS will be the central authority for implementing and maintaining the CC wireless network, and will maintain the highest standards for wireless implementations throughout the campus. To accomplish this task, the following policies will be applied:

  • All wireless access points will be Cisco 1200, with 128 bit encryption enabled, and mandatory LEAP (Lightweight Extensible Authentication Protocol) authentication against the central campus user directory.
  • All other makes and models of access points are prohibited on the Colorado College campus.
  • Network address translation (NAT) routing is prohibited on all access points.
  • Wireless Network Interface Cards (NICs) may not be configured to serve as an access point.
  • All access points will be installed and maintained by ITS.
