Faculty Instructional Technology ShowcaseSupport CC faculty! Join us for our first-ever Faculty Instructional Technology Showcase. If you would like to responsibly dispose of your old personal computer, ITS will be recycling computers on Monday, March 13th at the Barnes Science Center loading dock (located at the North East corner of the building). Please bring your equipment to the docking area before noon. We provide free recycling for all computer equipment except monitors. The company we use for recycling charges $10 per monitor, so if you plan to bring a monitor that morning, please also bring a check for $10 made out to Colorado College. Welcoming Back Manuel Rendón - SQL Database Administrator
Manuel is a San Antonio native and graduated from CC in 1993 with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. His next move was to complete his Master's degree in Computer Information Systems at St. Mary's University in San Antonio. Upon completion of the degree, he returned to CC as the Natural Sciences Academic Technology Specialist, where he remained for four and a half years; then opportunity knocked from Michigan's MITC (now NITLE) headquarters. Manuel was a technology specialist, whose responsibilities included guiding projects, creating workshops, designing websites, and consulting. His special interest is working with social software. In his free time, Manuel enjoys photography; especially subjects in nature and panoramic views. You can view his awe-inspiring gallery at http://www.rendonium.net/gallery2 . Manuel also blogs regularly at http://www.rendonium.net; this is the place to go for some great technical reading! When you come down to visit him in the basement of Armstrong Hall, you may also find him grooving to the beat of Electronica. Did You Know....(Microsoft Campus Agreement) Did you know that the version of Microsoft Office that is on your computer is leased from Microsoft and not owned by Colorado College? That's right! Colorado College leases all Microsoft programs on a yearly contract. We are currently licensed for Microsoft Office Suite which includes Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and PowerPoint. In addition to Office Suite we are licensed for FrontPage, Publisher, Visual Studio, Project and OneNote. If you do not have these programs on your computer, and you would like them please contact the Help Desk to schedule installation. Other popular programs such as Visio can be purchased for a per license fee (at academic pricing). Please contact Millie Brence-Austin for details. New Help Desk Website Launch! Check out the new site here: http://helpdesk.coloradocollege.edu. The site also features the addition of a threaded discussion support message board - we're hoping folks will gradually start using it to ask questions. We'll respond to the posts and over time build up a nice searchable knowledge base and hopefully a user community that helps each other out. You can find the message board by clicking the Help Desk Message Board link on the main page of the site or clicking the link below to go there directly: http://helpdesk.coloradocollege.edu/phpbb2/. Please note that any links or bookmarks/favorites you may have had to the old site will be broken and you will need to re-create them. CC Modem Pool - Retirement Reminder We've discussed the aging (and failing) CC modem pool in previous newsletters, but with its retirement date looming (May 23, 2006), we wanted to share a reminder with the CC community. As we review the modem pool usage logs, we can see that fewer and fewer people are relying on the modem pool, but we wanted to encourage the remaining dial-up subscribers to make alternate plans before commencement. If you'd like to review more detailed information about this decision, and see some information about alternatives to the CC modem pool, please review our newsletter articles from March 2005 and November 2006. ITS colleagues will be happy to consult with you about viable alternatives based upon your home networking needs. |
