Q: What is COBRA?
A: COBRA stands for Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985, a Federal Law that requires that most employers sponsoring group health plans offer employees and their dependents the opportunity for a temporary extension of health coverage, called "continuation of coverage", in certain instances where coverage under the plan would otherwise end.
Q: How do I become eligible for COBRA benefits?
A: As an employee you have the right to purchase COBRA coverage if your employment terminates (either voluntarily or involuntarily) for any reason other than gross misconduct, if your hours are reduced and your position changes to a non-benefit eligible position or if you are on an employer-approved leave.
Q: How long am I eligible for benefits after I terminate employment?
A: For benefit plans that are COBRA eligible the coverage will end on the last day of the month in which you terminate. See the explanation of COBRA benefits for more information. All other benefits will cease on the date of termination.
Q: How do I apply for COBRA coverage?
A: You will be notified by Colorado College after a qualifying event occurs. It is your responsibility to respond to this notification within 60 days in order to receive COBRA benefits.
Q: How long does my COBRA coverage last?
A: COBRA benefits are temporary; the law lists specific periods in which coverage may be terminated. Please see the explanation of COBRA benefits for more information.
