Colorado College's Definition of Eligible Dependents |
1. Legal spouse.
2. A common law spouse or domestic partner.*
- Domestic partner - same-sex partner of whom the employee lives with in a long-term relationship of indefinite duration. There must be an exclusive mutual commitment, in which the partners agree to be responsible for one another's welfare and share financial obligations.
- Common law - opposite-sex partner of whom the employee lives with in a long-term relationship of indefinite duration. There must be an exclusive mutual commitment, in which the partners agree to be responsible for one another's welfare and share financial obligations.
3. Unmarried natural or legally adopted children, step-children, common-law children, domestic partner children under age 19 or unmarried natural or legally adopted children, step-children, common-law children, domestic partner children up to age 24 if a full-time student and in all cases provided they rely on employee for support and maintenance.
4. Unmarried children, step-children, common-law children, domestic partner children if mentally and/or physically disabled for lifetime if the are completely dependent on the employee for support and maintenance.
5. Other children for whom the employee has guardianship or legal custody of that live in their household and are not married and will included as a dependent on the employees federal income tax return for the current or next tax year.
* Domestic Partners must satisfy the following criteria:
- Are one another's sole domestic partner and intend to remain so indefinitely
- Neither partner is married to anyone else
- Are not related by blood to a degree of closeness which would prohibit legal marriage in Colorado
- Are at least 18 years of age
- Reside together and are jointly responsible for one another's common welfare and share financial obligations.
In order to cover a domestic partner an employee must work with Human Resources in completing any additional necessary forms.
